Professor Tomasz Bednarz

CSIRO and Queensland University of Technology, Australia

 

 

 

A/Professor Tomasz Bednarz currently works as a Team Leader at the CSIRO Data61, and Principal Research Fellow at the QUT, Science and Engineering Faculty, the ARC Centre of Excellence for Mathematical and Statistical Frontiers and the Institute for Future Environments. He also holds adjunct positions at the University of Sydney (Design Lab), University of South Australia (School of Information Technology and Mathematical Sciences). Earlier he worked as a Computational Research Scientist and Projects Leader at CSIRO's Digital Productivity Flagship. He joined CSIRO in early 2009, and worked as 3-D Visualisation Software Engineer, on immersive and tele-operating technology projects. In early 2011, he moved to Sydney to carry out works on image analysis using GPGPUs and heterogenous architectures, and led NeCTAR funded Cloud-based image analysis and processing toolbox project (http://cloudimaging.net.au) - that project received merit Queensland's iAward 2015. He also led project Platform for Big Data Analytics and Visual Analytics, connecting data analytics, statistical modelling, image analytics, machine learning, visualisation into one stack of reusable solutions running on the CSIRO infrastructure. His broad range of expertise spanning from image analysis, through numerical simulations and experiments with fluids, visualisation, computer graphics, demoscene to human-computer interactions is evidenced by the quality and number of publications (http://www.researcherid.com/rid/A-7376-2011). He runs Brisbane GPU Meet-up group, is active in the ACM SIGGRAPH International Resources Committee, chairs IEEE Computer Society Queensland Chapter, chairs Brisbane ACM SIGGRAPH Chapter and leads the Brisbane Khronos Group chapter. He actively promotes use of computational and visualisation techniques for science and research, and art + science methodology.

Professor Sheng-Fen Chien

National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan

 

 

 

Sheng-Fen Chien was trained in architecture and computational design. She has been an educator of architecture, digital media and interaction design for more than 15 years. She is an advocator of embodied learning -- learning by doing and learning through making. Under her guidance, students work with analog and digital mediums, natural and engineered materials, through methods of conventional and digital crafts. In 2015, she curated Making Matters, an exhibition showcased course works of student designers/makers. The works were never meant to be art, the art was emerged In the Making.

 

Professor Ursula Damm

Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany

 

 

 

Ursula Damm studied at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf, followed by postgraduate studies at the Academy of Media arts in Cologne.Early sculptures were models of space and time, developed in a bodily experience. In the 1990s installationsbecame geometric processes of seddlement patterns. Since 1995 the installations became interactive, responding with algorithms to architectural aspects by using video tracking technology. Aside, Ursula Damm developed numerous installations onthe relationship of nature, science and civilization like Venus I-IV (part of the collection of the Ludwig-Museum Koblenz) ordouble helix swing (honorary mention ars electronica 2006.Her works have been presented internationally in various solo and group exhibitions, i.e. Goethe House NewYork; Translife Triennale at NAMOC in Peking; Laboral Centro de Creation Industrial, Gijon, Spain; Ars electronica 1999, 2006, 2011 and 2015; ISEA 2002 in Nagoya,Japan and 2006 in San José. Early this year her interactive public art installation at the Metro-Station Schadowstrasse in Düsselodorf/Germany has been inaugurated.

Since 2008 Ursula Damm holds the chair for Media Environments at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, where she established the Performance Plattform at the Digital Bauhaus Lab and a DIY Biolab.

Professor Tomimatsu Kiyoshi

Kyushu University, Japan

 

 

 

Kiyoshi Tomimatsu is a Professor of Interaction Design in the Department of Content and Creative Design at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan, where he was Vice Dean of the Faculty of Design between 2013 and 2015.His research interests are focused on experimenting with new strategiesin digital media presentation combined with art performance, which involve active audience participation.  He has published numerous papers throughout his career.

 

After being awarded his Bachelor of Arts in Design by the Kyushu Institute of Design in 1974, he joined the Sanyo Electric Company where he was chief designer until 1994.  In 1992 he was awarded a Diploma in Computer Related Design by the Royal College of Art in London, UK, and he then continued his studies in Japan, where he was awarded his PhD in 1998.Since 2012, he has been President of the Asia Digital Art and Design Association.His outside interests including sailing, and since 2015 he has been an international judge of world sailing competitions.

EmeritusProfessor Arthur I. Miller

ARTHUR I. MILLER is fascinated by the nature of creative thinking - in art on the one hand and science on the other. What are the similarities, what are the differences? He has published many critically acclaimed books, including Insights of Genius; Einstein, Picasso; Empire of the Stars; and 137, and writes for the Guardian and The New York Times. An experienced broadcaster and lecturer, he has curated exhibitions on art/science and writes engagingly about complex social and intellectual dramas, weaving the personal with the scientific to produce thoroughly-researched works that read like novels. He is professor emeritus of history and philosophy of science at University College London. His recent book Colliding Worlds: How Cutting-Edge Science is Redefining Contemporary Art (W.W. Professor Mike Stubbs

Director, FACT, UK

 

 

 

 

 

Mike Stubbs is the Director of FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology), the UK's leading organisation for commissioning and presenting film, video and new media arts from across the world. Stubbs was jointly appointed by FACT and Liverpool John Moores University in 2007, where he is Professor of Art, Media and Curating. Previously, Stubbs was Director at Hull Time Based Arts (HTBA), where his work had him recognised as a primary promoter of new media in an international context. He later became Head of Exhibitions for Australian Centre for Moving Image (ACMI), Melbourne. Encompassing a broad range of arts and media practice, Stubbs has commissioned and produced over 350 exhibition programmes including White Noise for ACMI, Tehching Hsieh for Liverpool Biennial, as well as PipilottiRist and sk-interfaces at FACT as part of European Capital of Culture in 2008. Currently, Stubbs is developing new work with Krzysztof Wodiczko for Liverpool Biennial 2016.


Stubbs is also an award-winning moving image artist whose work has won more than a dozen major international awards, including first prizes at the Oberhausen and Locarno Film Festivals. He is a fellow of the RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce) and was awarded a Fleck Fellowship at the Banff Centre in 2002. Stubbs is also one of the founders of the ROOT (Running Out of Time) and AND (Abandon Normal Devices) festivals, both exploring aspects of new technology art.

 

Professor Jutta Weber

The University of Paderborn, Germany

 

 

 

 

 

Jutta Weber is a STS scholar, philosopher of technology and professor for media studies at the University of Paderborn, Germany. Her research focuses on computational technoscience culture(s) asking how and for whom the non/human actors work. She has been visiting professor at several universities including Uppsala (Sweden), Vienna (Austria) and Twente (Netherlands). Recent publications include: 'Human-Machine Autonomies'.
